Spell Of Contemplation

My work is based on the theme of spiritual crisis which develops into a spiritual awakening as the story goes on. The character starts on a journey looking for understanding and a true meaning of existence. The character is in a true moment of crisis. I had a connection with the video and realized that part of the video and theme was really about my journey to finding myself and trying to find my place in the world. In my video installation I begin to truly connect with the world in different ways and find my way in the world.

 

I was inspired by Andrei Tarkovsky’s film “Stalker” and his constant recurring theme of hope. This inspired my idea further to make hope the thing that allowed the character to manage all the dark times in her journey and to push her further. I used sound to sculpt the time in my video. By using sound to slow down time I was able to create a kind of meditative state for the character. I mainly work in black and white and for this project I thought the black and white aesthetic allowed the video to hold the audience and allowed the viewer to connect with the piece more. I normally work with documentary work but I decided to experiment with performance art in this video and perform in the piece myself which is something I had never done before and really enjoyed and I think it worked a lot better than if I had used a model.
